A much needed “stay-cation” on the C&O Canal

Sometimes we just need to get away….even when we really can’t go away. Times like this call for a stay-cation!

I recently had a delightful staycation at an old refurbished lock house along the C&O Canal. Less than 2 miles from my own home, I knew I could easily return at a moment’s notice if needed…but it also gave me the chance to just be alone and reconnect with nature and history in my own community.

The C&O canal has offered me and my husband many great outdoor adventures. We practically lived there during COVID: taking long bike rides into Georgetown or to Great Falls, or going for walks with our little dog to get out of the house. We would often pass the lock houses and noticed that they were available to rent from the C&O Canal Trust.

These houses have a lot of history, as they once house the families of lock masters all along the canal. The lockmasters and their families were responsible for allowing boats to pass along the canal at a moment’s notice.

The Canal Trust had the brilliant idea of refurbishing these homes in the historical style of different eras to allow guests to experience life along the C&O Canal, while giving back to the preservation and conservation of the historical and natural heritage of the C&O canal tow path.

I was in Lockhouse 6, which allowed me the modern day comforts of indoor plumbing, electricity and easy access to civilization. It was decorated in 1950’s with its own 50’s playlist to boot. I was able to tune in to these oldies but goodies while I prepared my nightly meal in the kitchen and was transported back in time.

I had the opportunity to sit on the porch with my wine and cheese while I painted and enjoyed the view. I went for strolls along the Potomac and took in the views and wildlife. I read two books and played solitaire.

I breathed in…I breathed out…and just took a much needed moment for myself in a place and time that seemed…less chaotic and hectic.
