When Disasters Strike the Places and People We Love to Visit

When we travel, we have the great honor of stepping into and being welcomed by the communities and people that live in those places. We may go back to our homes after, but those places and people stay with us.

In June, I had the pleasure of returning to a wonderful place, The Round Hill Resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Upon arriving, I was greeted by familiar faces saying “welcome home.”

When a disaster strikes: Hurricanes, Earthquakes, Flooding, Fires…we think of those people and places that touched our hearts and wonder: ‘Are they ok?’ ‘Are their families ok?’ ‘Will they be able to get back on their feet?’

The report back is that Round Hill sustained only minor damages from Melissa and that they will welcome visitors back as soon as December 8th. We have also received report that all staff are safe and accounted for, but for the communities around Montego Bay and throughout Jamaica, the road ahead will be long.

As part of my commitment to Sustainable and Responsible Tourism, I do try to do my part in giving back to those communities that once welcomed me and my loved ones (and my clients), by donating a percentage of my profits to these communities.

This month I have donated a percentage of my profits to these communities through the Hanover Charities Employee Relief Fund. There are many ways to support the rebuilding and relief efforts from the American Red Cross, to World Central Kitchen, I encourage you to join me and show your love and appreciation to the people of Jamaica.

Hope to see you soon, Jamaica. One love.
